How to Enable Apple Intelligence on iPhone, iPad & Mac
How to Enable Apple Intelligence on iPhone, iPad, and Mac: Complete Setup Guide for 2026
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s built-in AI assistant that helps you write better, create images, and get smarter help from Siri—all while keeping your personal information private. This guide walks you through enabling it in just five simple steps, whether you’re using an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
What is Apple Intelligence?
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s suite of AI features designed to help you work smarter without sacrificing your privacy. Unlike other AI tools that send your data to servers for processing, Apple Intelligence works primarily on your device. This means your photos, emails, messages, and other personal information stay on your device where they belong.
For tasks too complex for your device to handle alone, Apple uses Private Cloud Compute—servers powered by Apple Silicon that process your requests without storing your data or making it accessible to Apple’s other services. Apple collects only limited metadata (like request size and duration), never the content of your requests or the results.
You get all of this without downloading a separate app or signing up for a new service. Apple Intelligence integrates directly into the apps you already use: Mail, Notes, Messages, Safari, and more. It’s designed to work seamlessly with iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
Current as of: iOS 26.4.1 and macOS 26.4.1 (April 2026)

Why You Should Care About Apple Intelligence
Your privacy is protected. Apple Intelligence prioritizes on-device processing, meaning your personal information isn’t sent to cloud servers or third-party companies. You get powerful AI features without the privacy tradeoffs of traditional AI tools.
Smarter writing assistance. Rewrite text in different tones (friendly, professional, concise), check grammar, and proofread in any app where you type. Select text in Mail, Notes, Messages, or Safari, and Apple Intelligence helps you communicate better.
Image creation without the internet. Create original images directly on your device using Image Playground—no waiting for cloud processing or dealing with watermarks. You can use this feature in Notes, Messages, and other supported apps.
A smarter Siri. Ask Siri questions about your personal information (like “How much did I spend on coffee last month?”) and it understands context from your apps and settings. Future updates in 2026 will bring even deeper context awareness and the ability to handle multi-step tasks across multiple apps.
No new apps or subscriptions. Everything is built into your device. You don’t need to download separate AI apps, sign up for cloud services, or manage additional accounts.
Things to Consider Before Enabling Apple Intelligence
Device compatibility is strict. Apple Intelligence only works on iPhone 15 Pro and newer (all iPhone 16 models included), iPad with M1 or later, and Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later). If you have an older iPhone like the iPhone 14 or iPhone 15 standard, Apple Intelligence isn’t available—you’ll need a newer device.
You need storage space. Apple Intelligence requires at least 7 GB of available storage on your device. If your storage is nearly full, you may need to delete files, photos, or apps first.
Regional availability varies. Apple Intelligence is available in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, EU countries, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Important: If your device was purchased in mainland China or your account is set to the China region, Apple Intelligence is not available. Apple is still working with regulators on availability in mainland China. Some regions may show a waitlist (typically 30 minutes to 3 hours before access is granted).
Language and Siri must match. Your device language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language. If they’re mismatched, Apple Intelligence won’t work properly.
How to Enable Apple Intelligence—Step by Step
Step 1: Check If Your Device is Compatible
Open Settings → General → About and look at the model name. You need:
- iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model
- iPad: iPad (7th generation or later with M1 or later)
- Mac: Any Mac with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, etc.)
If your device is older than iPhone 15 Pro, you’ll see that Apple Intelligence isn’t available. In that case, you’ll need to upgrade to a compatible device to use these features.
Step 2: Update to the Latest Software
Go to Settings → General → Software Update on your iPhone or iPad (or System Settings → General → Software Update on Mac). If an update is available, tap Download and Install and wait for your device to restart.
Apple Intelligence requires at least iOS 18.1 or iPadOS 18.1 (or macOS 15.1), but for security and full feature support, make sure you’re running the latest version available for your device. As of April 2026, the current versions are iOS 26.4.1 and iPadOS 26.4.1 for newer devices, or the latest iOS 18.x update if you’re on the iOS 18 line.
Step 3: Open Apple Intelligence Settings
On iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. (Note: In newer iOS versions, this path may be located in a slightly different place; check if you see an “Apple Intelligence” option in your Settings menu.)
On Mac: Go to System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
If you see a message saying “Join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist,” this means Apple is rolling out the feature gradually in your region. Tap the button to join. You’ll typically get access within 30 minutes to 3 hours. If you don’t see a waitlist option, you’re already eligible to enable it.
Step 4: Enable Apple Intelligence
Toggle on the switch next to “Apple Intelligence.” You’ll see a popup explaining what Apple Intelligence can do and how it protects your privacy. Read through the description, then tap “Enable Apple Intelligence” at the bottom to confirm.
Your device will now prepare the features for first use. This may take a few minutes. You’ll see a notification when it’s ready.
Step 5: Grant Permission for Individual Features (If Prompted)
When you first use certain Apple Intelligence features—like text rewriting, image generation, or enhanced Siri—your device may ask for permission. Simply tap “Allow” when prompted. You can always change these permissions later in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri if you want to turn off specific features.
Step 6: Verify Apple Intelligence is Working
Open Notes or Mail and try the writing tools:
- Write or paste some text
- Long-press or select the text
- Look for the new “Apple Intelligence” or writing tools option that appears
- Tap it and try rewriting the text in a different tone
Or test Siri:
- Press and hold the home button (or side button on newer iPhones)
- Ask a personal question like “How many steps did I take today?” or “What meetings do I have tomorrow?”
- If Siri answers with information from your device, Apple Intelligence is working
If you see these options working, Apple Intelligence is successfully enabled and ready to use.
Troubleshooting: Apple Intelligence Doesn’t Appear
If you don’t see Apple Intelligence in Settings:
Check your region. Apple Intelligence is not available in mainland China or a few other regions. If you’re outside the supported regions (US, Canada, UK, Ireland, EU, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa), the feature won’t appear.
Verify device compatibility again. Go back to Settings → General → About. Confirm you have iPhone 15 Pro or newer, iPad M1 or later, or Mac with Apple Silicon. If you have an older model, Apple Intelligence simply isn’t compatible.
Ensure software is fully updated. Go to Settings → General → Software Update again and check if there’s a pending update you missed. Restart your device after updating, then check Settings again.
Make sure device language matches Siri language. Go to Settings → General → Language & Region and verify your device language. Then check Settings → Siri & Search and make sure Siri’s language is set to the same language. Mismatch between these two will prevent Apple Intelligence from working.
Check storage space. You need at least 7 GB of available storage. Go to Settings → General → About and look at “Available” storage. If it’s less than 7 GB, delete some files or apps to free up space.
Contact Apple Support if issues persist. If you’ve checked all of these and Apple Intelligence still doesn’t appear, visit support.apple.com or contact Apple Support directly. Provide them with your device model, software version, and region.
Apple Intelligence is now ready to help you write better, create images, and get smarter assistance from Siri—all while keeping your data private. Start with the writing tools in Mail or Notes, and explore each feature as you go. As Apple releases updates throughout 2026, you’ll see even more powerful AI capabilities added to your device.
