How to Use AirPods Live Translation: Complete Setup Guide
How to Use AirPods Live Translation: Real-Time Conversation Translation for Global Teams
Struggling to understand conversations in another language? AirPods Live Translation lets you have real-time multilingual conversations without switching apps or devices, powered by Apple’s on-device intelligence to keep your discussions natural and flowing.
What is AirPods Live Translation?
AirPods Live Translation is an on-device feature that enables real-time conversation translation in AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, allowing you to have multilingual discussions with advanced processing powered by Apple’s neural engine. The feature translates both incoming audio and your spoken responses in real-time, maintaining conversation context and natural flow throughout your call or conversation.
Primary translation processing happens directly on your device, though complex translation tasks may occasionally route to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (a secure cloud environment). Apple states that no data is retained or accessed by staff when cloud processing is used. This approach prioritizes on-device processing whenever possible while maintaining translation quality.
Current as of: iOS 26+ (released fall 2025)

Why Use This Feature?
- Seamless Multilingual Communication: Conduct business calls and client meetings across language barriers without switching apps or breaking conversation flow
- Professional Accessibility: Ideal for international professionals, remote teams, and anyone who regularly communicates across language barriers
- Context-Aware Accuracy: Apple Intelligence maintains conversation context to provide more natural, accurate translations rather than word-for-word conversions
- Privacy-First Processing: Most translation happens directly on your device, keeping sensitive business conversations private and not dependent on cloud connectivity for basic functionality
Things to Consider
- Device Requirements: Live Translation only works with AirPods Pro (2nd generation and later), AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, and AirPods Max 2. You’ll need the H2 chip or later. This feature does NOT work on AirPods Pro 1st generation
- iOS Version Requirement: You must have iOS 26 or later installed on your iPhone. AirPods Live Translation was introduced in iOS 26 (released fall 2025) and is not available in iOS 18 or earlier versions
- Language Support: As of early 2026, supported languages include English (UK/US), French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, and languages added in iOS 26.1 including Japanese, Korean, Italian, and Chinese (Mandarin Traditional and Simplified). Full language pair support continues to expand. Some languages may be in beta depending on your region
- Battery Usage: Continuous on-device processing does use additional battery power, though exact impact percentages vary based on language pair complexity and device model
How to Set Up and Use AirPods Live Translation - 6 Steps
Step 1: Verify Your AirPods Model and iOS Version
Open the Settings app on your iPhone, then go to Bluetooth. Find your AirPods in the list and tap the ‘i’ icon next to them. Confirm your model name—you need AirPods Pro 2nd generation or newer, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, or AirPods Max 2.
Next, check your iOS version by opening Settings → General → About. Look for the “Software Version” field. You need iOS 26 or later. If you have iOS 25 or earlier, you’ll need to update: go to General → Software Update and follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 2: Enable Live Translation in Accessibility Settings
Open the Settings app and navigate to Accessibility. Scroll down and tap AirPods. You’ll see a “Live Translation” option—tap the toggle switch next to it to turn it ON. This enables the feature globally across all apps and conversations.
Step 3: Set Your Languages
While still in the Live Translation settings (Settings → Accessibility → AirPods → Live Translation), tap Languages. Select your primary language (the language you naturally speak) from the first menu. Then select the target language you want to hear translations in from the second menu.
You can add up to 5 different language pairs for quick switching during conversations without restarting your call. This is especially useful if you regularly switch between different language combinations.
Step 4: Activate Live Translation During a Call or Conversation
During an active phone call or in-person conversation (with AirPods Pro helping you hear clearly), activate Live Translation by doing one of these:
- Press and hold the stem of either AirPod for 1-2 seconds until you hear an activation tone
- Use Siri: Say “Start Live Translation” on your device
- Control Center: Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen, find the Live Translation icon, and tap it
Your AirPods will announce activation with an audio tone. You’re now translating both directions of the conversation.
Step 5: Switch Languages Without Ending Your Call
During an active translation session, you can change language pairs without disconnecting from your conversation:
- Double-tap the AirPod stem, or
- Use Siri: Say “Change language to [language name]” (for example, “Change language to French”)
The translation direction reverses automatically—if you were translating English to French, the system switches to French to English when you select the new pair.
Step 6: Optimize Translation Accuracy in Your Environment
For the best translation accuracy and clarity:
- Move to quieter locations if you’re in a noisy environment. The microphone on your AirPods will pick up cleaner audio from your voice and the speaker
- Reduce distance between yourself and the other person when possible
- Keep iOS updated: Go to Settings → General → Software Update regularly. Apple continuously refines translation algorithms, and newer iOS versions include improved accuracy
- Check for AirPods firmware updates through the Bluetooth settings—ensure your AirPods are running the latest firmware
AirPods Live Translation brings professional-grade conversation translation to your everyday device, making international communication faster and more natural. Whether you’re conducting business across borders or connecting with friends globally, this feature removes language as a barrier—all without leaving your conversation or touching your iPhone.
